A big idea

In 1884, a young visionary named Julius Maggi had an idea: help busy families cook nutritious meals at home. He dreamt of creating food products that would become as ubiquitous as salt and pepper.

Maggi seasoning is born

After a few years of intense research, Julius' first powdered pea soup was born. Based on nutritious dry pulse, Maggi soup delivered a tasty dish in a simple way. But he didn't stop there. Julius went on to invent the famous Maggi Liquid Seasoning sauce and Maggi Bouillon cubes, now staples delivering taste to millions of homes.

International reach

Julius' products were the first of their kind and quickly spread around the world, prompting him to establish branches or affiliates in Germany, France, Italy, the UK, and the US.

1900

A branding pioneer

By 1900, Julius had registered variations of his name in multiple countries. In Switzerland, he protected 18 variations – from Magi to Magique – to ward off imitators. From the beginning, Maggi was identifiable through its deep red, golden yellow and black colors. Julius was also among the first to advertise with enamel placards outside grocers' shops and he ran poster campaigns on trams and railway carriages. To keep customers, he operated one of the world's first customer loyalty schemes.
