The story of a legend
A creative legend enters the world
Luisa Spagnoli was born to a local family in Perugia. In an era when female entrepreneurs were almost unheard of, she created two successful businesses: a clothing company, and the Perugina chocolate factory.
Luisa creates the famous recipe
After carefully kneading hazelnut grains, Luisa Spagnoli adds a whole hazelnut then covers her creation with dark chocolate. She calls it 'Cazzoto' as the shape resembles a punch… soon to become a kiss.
Baci is born
Luisa changes the name to Baci and commissions a new look. The silver wrapping with blue writing and love note is the work of Federico Seneca, Perugina's Art Director. His inspiration? Hayez's painting, 'Il Bacio'.
A huge success
In just five years, the Perugina factory creates one hundred million Baci chocolates.
From Perugia to New York
Baci Perugina becomes an Italian star in the United States of America, when Perugina opens on New York's prestigious Fifth Avenue.
